Here are the ACC, I strive to maintain a safe and clean environment. Online video and/or phone sessions are offered to those who would prefer not to attend in-person sessions, and the office is sanitized and cleaned between appointments.
Initial Phone Screening/Consultation (15 min.) – Complimentary
Please give me a call or email me, and I will respond within 24 business hours, so that we can set up a 15-minute phone screening/consultation. During this time, I will provide information about my clinic, answer any questions that you might have, and ask you a few questions about your main reasons for seeking services. This will help both of us gather an initial impression of whether this clinic is the best fit for your needs and goals. Then, we can set up our first session.
Psychotherapy Intake (60 min.)
Our first session will be a psychotherapy intake, during which time I will discuss the legal terms of service with you (please see attached forms on the Contact page), and talk with you about your history of concerns, reasons for seeking therapy, and goals for therapy. Then, I will assess your main areas of concern and discuss general treatment options with you. In some cases, this may take up to 2 to 3 sessions, depending on the extent of your concerns.
Follow-Up Intake (60 min.)
After intake, we will then schedule a follow-up session to discuss feedback and recommendations for therapy. During this time, we will also collaboratively develop a customized treatment plan.
Individual Therapy (60 min.)
After we collaboratively develop a treatment plan, the therapeutic intervention can begin. I provide the most state-of-the-art, evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapies. I collaborate with you to customize the therapy to your individual needs, goals, learning style, and personality. Each therapy session typically lasts between 50 and 60 minutes at a frequency of once per week. However, I am happy to adjust the length and frequency of sessions to accommodate your individual needs, as long as it would not be contra-indicated for therapy. Adjustments in pricing in such cases will be discussed on an individual case basis.
Exposure Therapy/Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP):
(I like to call it “Courage Therapy”)
Exposure therapy is a front-line cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that is most effective for the treatment of anxiety. This includes all anxiety-related disorders, such as social anxiety, OCD, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Exposure therapy involves exercises that are designed to help you face and overcome the experience of anxiety itself and anxiety-provoking situations. For example, if your primary anxiety concern is social anxiety, we might have you practice a number of different social interactions until your anxiety in social situations no longer significantly concerns you. However, we do this in a supportive, collaborative, gradual, and systematic way in order to maximize your progress. While this may initially sound intimidating, most clients find this to be a rewarding and empowering process. The spirit of exposure therapy is to promote more courageous living, such that the vulnerability involved in anxiety no longer holds you back from living the way you want to live.
Other Types of Therapy Provided:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is considered the front-line gold-standard therapy in the field of psychology. It typically involves 3 phases:
1) Education and awareness of psychological processes (i.e., how mental health problems develop, how thoughts and emotions work)
2) Discovering unhelpful thinking patterns and learning strategies for developing more helpful thinking patterns
3) Enhancing skills for managing emotions and changing problematic behaviors (this includes exposure therapy described above)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT is an evidence-based therapy that is built from CBT, but extends beyond CBT by promoting acceptance, flexibility in thinking, and living in a way that’s consistent with one’s values.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT is an evidence-based therapy that focuses on enhancing concrete skills for managing emotions and interpersonal relationships (e.g., communication, assertiveness, connection).
Mindfulness Therapy: Mindfulness therapy is an evidence-based therapy aimed at enhancing mindfulness, the practice of non-judgmental present moment awareness.
Motivational Interviewing (MI): MI is an evidence-based therapeutic technique for clients who would like to make a change in life but feel uncertain or ambivalent about making this change because change is vulnerable and scary! In other words, MI is a way of talking with your therapist that helps empower you to decide whether you would like to make a change on your own terms. MI helps to promote self-agency and motivation for change.
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT): CFT is a newer therapy that is gaining more evidence and primarily focuses on promoting well-being by enhancing compassion toward yourself and others.
Teletherapy (i.e., skype therapy)
Is transportion or time spent commuting an issue for you? I can offer teletherapy to those for whom transportation or commuting time is a barrier to therapy. Teletherapy is the delivery of therapy services via interactive, online audio and video streaming, like skype, but much more secure and HIPAA compliant. However, there may be some cases in which this form of therapy may be contra-indicated. In such cases, I will inform you and recommend otherwise. Please contact me for more information.
Group Therapy (2 hours)– Not available at this time
At some times of year, I also provide cognitive behavioral group therapy focused on education about mental health and psychological processes (e.g., emotions, thoughts, and behaviors) and building skills for managing emotions and thinking patterns. I provide a group therapy program for individuals struggling with anxiety, as well as a group therapy program for individuals struggling with past traumatic experiences. The group therapy programs are two-hour sessions that run once per week for a total length of 12 sessions/weeks. They are structured similar to a class/workshop, such that each session will have a set agenda of discussion topics and skills to learn. Group members will be given home therapy practice assignments in between sessions to help group members apply the concepts and skills to their daily lives.
Diagnostic Clarification: People often seek to understand whether their concerns and experiences may be consistent with a mental health diagnosis. I provide psychological evaluation services for this purpose upon request.
MMPI-2 Psychological/Personality Testing: MMPI-2 testing is often requested or required prior to employment, continuing education, or certain training programs. This service includes administration, scoring, interpretative report, and discussion of results with whomever you choose (pending your written permission).
